Awakening..

It has been quite some time. There have been so many and so few changes in that time, and sometimes real life gets in the way of this contrived Internet world. There has been much I have wanted to share, but little inclination to actually do it. This is beginning to change. There is an awakening taking place, and I hope this blog will continue throughout. The content may be a little different, but I think that's the nature of our lives - the basic foundations always remains the same, and it is the content that changes and grows.

All that glitters

After seeing these glitter heels from Topshop I decided I wanted a pair of my own, I didn't think however, that I would get enough wear out of them to warrant the £55 price tag; So instead, one evening  I had a go at making my own, and I'm pretty pleased with the results!

You will need:

One pair of shoes
Strong, waterproof glue (I used builders PVA)
Glitter (I got 10g of rose gold glitter for 99p from ebay)
Low tack masking tape
brush
sandpaper

The making bit

*First make sure your chosen shoes are clean, I used a suede Primark pair - so I just wiped them with a damp cloth.
*If using a PVA or leather pair slightly buff with a fine grain sandpaper, this helps the glue to stick to the shoes.
*Mask off the area you want to glitter with tape.
*Using the brush paste glue onto the shoes and then quickly pour over the glitter, I did this over a lot of newspaper to minimise mess and save as much glitter as possible.
*Leave to dry completely, then brush another layer of glue over the top of the glitter to make the shoes water proof and reduce glitter loss.
*Lastly, once the top layer of glue is dry buff off any glitter that has stuck onto the soles of the shoes with the sandpaper.

And that's it, it really was that simple, and actually quite fun. Nothing takes you back to your childhood more than messing about with glitter and glue.
I'm planning on wearing them with my 60's party dress, or black cigarette pants next time I go out. I think they're going to be super fun to dance in.

Study Break

So, there has been a little hiatus here on the blog. Alas, I have begun my next degree year and the work load is reading heavy, to say the least. This year is Nineteenth Century Literature, with a lot of Eliot, Zola, and Dickens. Not exactly easy going, but interesting none the less.
All my time has been consumed with working the day job (Urgh), sleeping, and studying. I'm trying my very best to time manage, I literally have all my days planned until Christmas, but somehow it never quite works out how I expect it to.

So it follows that I've been spending most of my time reading in my corner of the sofa, or here, in my little nook of our shared office space. I'm kind of in love with my white desk, I spent more time than I care to think about looking for the perfect work area, as it turned out Ikea solved my problem; it was the magnetic back board that got me. It's the one area of the house where I totally indulge my passion for all things tat, including Hello Kitty stickers, a framed parsnip crisp (yes crisp), and animal erasers.

I have a few posts planned for the next few weeks, including a homemade baby gift, an exciting project that includes glitter (and shoes), a couple of book reviews, and hopefully some festive outfit posts!

A tiny review by tiny telegram: 'Northanger Abbey'

I have never really spoken about my degree before, I'm not entirely sure why, maybe I thought it wasn't interesting blog fodder, or maybe I didn't really feel confident enough to talk about something I'm still in the process of learning about. But, for nine months of the year I study English Literature through the Open University. Going away to uni wasn't really for me, which is why I chose to do distance learning, and I've pretty much loved every year (especially Shakespeare). However, last year, I did Children's Literature, which I thought I would love, but actually I found studying tough, I had no concentration, nothing driving me forward.
So this year going to change that with these little reviews. I'm aiming to post one or two a month (depending on book length/study time) to keep me motivated, and to tell everyone how much I loved/hated my most recent read.

This years module is The Nineteenth-century novel, and the first book on my reading list was Jane Austen's:

Now, I've read Pride and Prejudice before, and thought it was pretty blimin' spectacular, and I understand that Northanger Abbey was her first novel, but I just didn't find as engaging as its more famous friend. It seemed to take a long time for it to go anywhere, especially to Northanger Abbey itself. And while the main character Catherine Morland is intelligent, active (for a woman of her time), and even in some ways quite similar to Elizabeth Bennett, the other characters that surrounded her, such as Isabella Thorpe, undermine that intelligence as Catherine becomes so easily taken in by them.

This was the same for many of the male characters, who almost felt like parodies. Now whether this was intentional or not I couldn't really tell, there seemed to be some moments in which Austen was self referentially mocking her novel as a whole, and other moments of complete seriousness involving the same characters.

I was also disappointed that the gothic undertones never really came to anything, we got exciting hints of murder, or mystery that just turned out to be some laundry bills, or Catherine's over excited imagination. It sort of felt like a novel of ideas, different inspirations married together to make a whole, that she later developed into her other novels.

Having said all of this however, I did find the drawn out romance between Catherine and Henry so subtle that it came across realistically, and refreshingly normal for a novel of it's time. There were no bouts of near fatal illness, or mis-engagements. It felt both old fashioned and contemporary, with mis-understandings and idle gossip becoming both the making and breaking of their relationship.

So overall I thought it was..alright. I liked Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility much better, the characters are more rounded, and the omniscient narration gives deeper insight, which I think, heightens the emotional experience of the book, an emotion that I felt Northanger Abbey lacked.

Now time to move on to my next book, which I'm pretty excited about because of this:

Sunshine memories...

So after reading Vivatramp's holiday post, and looking at pictures full of beautiful weather, and good food I got all nostalgic for sunshine, beaches, sorbet, and tacky holiday gifts. So, I dug out some photos from last years holiday to Portugal, I wont pretend we spent the week in the lap of luxury, but what we did have was amazing heat, blue seas, interesting people, a great photography exhibition, and better hair. I miss that hair.

I wont be going on holiday this year, I don't think funds will allow (although I do really want to go to Iceland, anyone want to give me a free holiday?) but with two long weeks off the daily grind coming up I would like to do something a little exciting, I'm just not sure what yet, maybe a trip down to Cornwall or Somerset, or a weekend in a city? I don't care really, as long as the SUN COMES BACK! I need that vitamin D on my skin.

The Best Policy...

Honesty that is. I haven't really made a New Years resolution as such, I don't smoke or drink or do exciting but naughty things. Instead I have decided to make a sort of promise. I will be honest. Honest with others, honest with myself and honest in my writing. I'm not a liar, but it is all to easy to hide the truth in both good and bad respects, and it only leads to trouble.

So in the spirit of honesty here is something I shouldn't like but do...
